Princess Party Craft Ideas

Once you’ve decided to throw a Princess Party, you’ll need to plan activities to keep the little princesses entertained.  Beyond singing songs, dancing, and playing dress up, guests will enjoy making a princess-themed craft.  Below are a few craft ideas.

1.  Decorate tiaras.  Purchase foam tiaras with the plastic coil or plastic headband.  Usually, these are available at Walmart or Michaels for around $1.00.  Oriental Trading carries foam tiaras, also. You can buy twelve of them for around $5.99.  If you choose to buy your tiaras at orientaltrading.com, you can purchase jewel stickers to add glitz to the tiaras.

Oriental Trading sells paper tiaras that can be decorated with stickers, markers and crayons if you need a cheaper craft for your Princess Party.  They cost around 12 for $2.99.

2.  Make wands.  You can by foam star wands from Michaels.  All the princesses will have to do is tie a pretty ribbon around the stick.  Then they can decorate the wands with jewel stickers.  If you prefer, you can cut stars from self-adhesive foam.  Give each princess two stars and a metallic pencil for the rod.  Instruct the girls to take the backing off one star.  Then place the eraser end of the pencil on the sticky side of the star.  Remove the backing off the other star and sandwich the pencil between the stars. They can decorate the stars and add ribbon around the pencil below the star.

The princesses will be excited about decorating their own tiaras or wands.  If time and your budget permits, the girls can do both crafts.  These crafts are worthwhile because the princesses will continue playing with them long after the party is over.

Children’s Birthday Party Loot Bags

I’m not a big fan of giving  traditional loot bags out at children’s birthday parties.  Although they are economical, I enjoy other options. Below are some alternatives to traditional birthday party loot bags.

1.  Give individually wrapped cookies.  You can bake the cookies yourself or purchase them.  Place them in a cellophane bag or wrap them up in cellophane wrap.  Secure a pretty bow around them and include an attached message to the ribbon.

2.  Make chocolate lollipops.  Purchase a candy mold, lollipops sticks, wrappers, and chocolate.  Melt the chocolate pieces according to the directions.  Pour the chocolate liquid into the mold.  Then place the sticks into the chocolate about half way.  Refrigerate the candy so it hardens.  Once the suckers have hardened, put them in the wrappers.  Add a bow for beauty.  Pass them out before the children leave the party.

3.  Give out party pictures.  Take a group picture of the party guests during the party.  Print the picture on the spot while the party is going on.  Before the children leave, give them a picture.  You can give it to them in a mini photo album, or let the children make theme-related picture frames to take home along with their picture. They’ll have a special picture to remember the party fun.

Birthday parties don’t have to include traditional loot bags.   Yes, they are economical and easy to make up, but they tend to be forgettable and wasteful.

Children’s Party Picture Frame Craft: A Loot Bag Alternative

Children enjoy going to birthday parties and receiving goodies to take home.  Loot bags filled with candy and trinkets seem to be the least expensive and quickest gift parents can think of to send home with party guests.  However, picture frames decorated by the children at the party are a nice alternative to children’s party loot bags.

Michael’s sells unfinished wooden picture frames for about $1.00 per frame.  The picture frames don’t have a back to them and use a round peg as the stand.  These frames are perfect for a party craft activity because of the decorative possibilities.

A day before your guests arrive, you can cover the picture frames with a primer for a smoother decorating surface if you’d like.  If you’re unconcerned about the frame’s texture, however, spray paint the frames your preferred color.  Make certain you do all picture frame painting at least 24-hours before the party.  You want them to be dry, so the children can decorate them at the party and take them home.

You can buy foam stickers that complement the party theme to decorate the picture frames.  For instance, if you’re throwing a princess party, buy some princess-themed foam stickers, such as castles, wands, tiaras and stars.  You can buy foam letters, so the children can put their names on the picture frames, also. Foamies has a wide selection of colorful foam stickers that can be used to decorate the frames.   Check out your local Dollar Store for foam stickers, too.  They sometimes carry an assortment of foam stickers.

If you have a digital camera and a printer, you can take a picture of the children, print them, and put their photo in their picture frame before they leave.  With their decorated frame and picture, they’ll have a creative party memento to take home with them instead of a loot bag.
