Inspiration from Cruella DeVil: A Black and White Formal

by gwaar
Disney’s 101 Dalmatians (1996) is a classic tale of Dalmatian puppies’ capture and brave escape from the evil Cruella DeVil. If you’ve never seen Disney’s 101 Dalmatians movie, you must see it to observe Glenn Close’s costumes. They are stylish and striking. The use of black, white, and red in the movie should be referenced when decorating for a black and white formal event.
Black and white are high contrast colors, and when used together, they can create a sense of formality and elegance. Think of men dressed in black tuxedos and white shirts. Using black and white for a formal event, such as a banquet, makes sense. Imagine fifty or more round banquet tables draped with black linen tablecloths and a shorter white tablecloth on top of the black linen. Adding to the presentation are white china place settings on the table for each guest. Then visualize black linen napkins fanned out on each plate.
In the movie, Cruella’s red lipstick or some red accessory makes the black and white combination really pop. So, on the tables you imagined, picture red rose petals sprinkled on the table. Red linen napkins instead of black would be snazzier. For the centerpiece, a red candle sitting on a round or square mirror would be pretty.
The black and white colors add the contrast and the red adds the pop. Consider this color combination for your next formal or semi-formal event. Also, if you really want to use inspiration from Cruella DeVil, throw in some black and white animal print while decorating for your black and white event.
